Tis the Season for a Chicken Update
December 1, 2010 by Rhea Hawkins
It has been a couple month since my last chicken update. The chicks are doing well. They're 5 months old now and they no longer live in the dining room -- they have been happily residing in their big girl house for about 3 months.
As would be expected, a few things have changed in the last few months. For one, they're no longer chicks. The final count: 5 hens, 1 rooster. Chicken a la Charlie is a man-bird. He officially cock-a-doodles in the mornings. Since we live in a little peninsula of county land, we’ll keep him as long as he remains nice. If he gets mean... We’ll be looking for a new home for him. You know, like that dog from childhood that went to live on a farm.
It’s winter. And they’re not liking it. If we shovel off an area outside their coop, they’ll come out. But they don’t seem to think that they’re able to walk on the snow. The first few days they ventured out, but now even a fist full of scratch (chicken treats) won’t lure them off their shoveled island.
Finally, we still have no eggs. Given their age, it could be any day. We rearranged their nesting boxes last weekend to make them extra cozy and inviting. Fingers crossed.
